Thomas Wilson-Cook

I craft well-meaning things, like photographs, software, clothes, and words. You can see what I'm up to on my now page.

I want to build a kinder, fairer world for everyone, even when it's hard.

Writing

I try to think and be curious, which is why I keep a weblog and, equally worth mentioning, what got me through a Ph.D. in Education Technology.

Here are some things I've written recently:

  1. Changelog: Personal photo management with Immich - Coolify, a VPS, and S3-compatible storage. (2026-02-20)
  2. Website Changelog: 2026-02-16 (2026-02-16)
  3. A bet proposition for Mr. Kevin Roose. Or: Writing code by hand will still be immesurably more relevant than programming by punchcards in 22 months. (2026-02-15)

Career

I am a Lead Developer in the UK's Civil Service, helping digital teams build software for our justice system. I fill the gaps between folks in tech, product, design, data, strategy, and research.

I have been building software for over a decade. I worked freelance with founding teams, was Head of Software Engineering at Oxwash (acquired), helped make bicyle insurance more fair at Laka, and founded a front-end team at Privitar (acquired).

I am also a freelance photographer, specialising in working with people and community. I do that as Wilson-Cook Photography.
